Excellent! Finally some one is writing about different points of view on so-called 'limited' animation and its possibility. I often protested against over-simplified version of limited animation concept in the, well, Disney-dominated-practice. I look forward more articles like this. I personally have been advocating a word 'effective' animation instead, and would be interested to read more on why you have chosen word 'selective'.
Would you extend this subject beyond anime and Japan? You may already know, that efforts to make a film with least motion/efforts with the most effective results can be found in experimental short films, like 'La jetée', or among other independent films. This also concerns digital mangas (graphic novels) on the net. Anyway, thank you for the great article.
